This week I’ve spent every evening watching the democratic national convention. Last night we made ranch popcorn as we watched Edwards. But every night this week has been fantastic, I’ve gotten a chance to get fired up and to get teary at the thought of what could be a fruitful and honest democracy with Virginia and Russell and Jason. (not us, having a democracy together! haha no, not just the four of us! You’re silly, internet! ) But honestly, we all would get emotional about the idea of what America has the ability to be. It might just be this desperation to get away from our current administration that is brewing deep within us. But I think there is something greater than that. Is it possible that these past four years, full of this destruction home, disaster abroad and fundamental distrust in our leaders have actually taught us to be more aggressive about participating? Could Bush have unintentionally created a stronger America as we fight against him?
I remember when we would talk about Generation x and Generation y, in political science classes, these terms would be associated with our generations, those of sweeping apathy regarding politics and the community. We had never seen a war and we were coming into our own during a very comfortable 1990’s economy. Things were so easy for us that we didn’t have to think about the state of America...simply, it wasn’t in jeopardy then.
When the democrats talk about being “more responsible abroad” I remember really identifying with a quote of Sen. Robert Byrd during the beginning of this Iraqi war: “When will we as Americans realize our ability to inspire is more powerful than our will to intimidate?”
When will we?
p.s. i love barack omaba!
