Big Envelope
Yesterday, I got home from work, exhausted and happy that we just sent out this $1.5 million dollar grant to this huge-normous pharmaceutical company. And when I got in home a little sleepy and pleased with myself I stopped at the door to checked my mail - There was an envelope from NYU. Not a small envelope either. I just got accepted into the teaching masters program I was looking into in the big apple.
Masters in the Art of Teaching, grades 7-12 with optional extention grades 5-6
My mother hates this. She's completely petrified of New York City - and will do everything in her power to convince me not to go - up to, and including saying: You'll never see your family again if you move to New York. hahaha! Who's mother says things like that? haha. She was insisting that people that move to that big, gross city never leave and no one ever visits them, ever. It's like some sort of isolated island of crime and despair far, far away from everything else. Even though, on the map, I'd actually live closer to her than I do now. What a funny lady.
For the record, I haven't decided about what I'm going to do yet for next fall but the gears are turning...

i guess whether nyc is a good idea depends in part on where you want to be afterwords. after three years of law school i am among other pursuits seeking employment through the Baltimore City Teaching Residency, which will help pay 75% of my masters in teaching costs at someplace like Hopkins, Loyola or Towson while I am teaching full time in middle or high school. i've always wanted to live in nyc for a while, but it is super expensive compared to baltimore, so you'd be investing tuition and cost of living in nyc, when both might be a bit easier here in bmore...good luck with decisions

My Maine parents said the same thing, and BOTH of their children went to the big dirty city at the same time. We managed to get them down here on a few occasions, and my dad even he realized he likes it here (after some random encounters with good hearted guys on the street that helped him with his car trouble).
Also, yeah it can be pricey but if you dig around you can find decent places with decent rent, and you know you want to live in Brooklyn, admit it :)
